If you are planning on building something extra on your Auckland section, the process is becoming easier with changes to the Building Act.
The changes, due to come into effect later this year, mean that some smaller projects will now no longer require consent from the local authority. This will not only make it easier but also save you money with less paperwork required.
Types of building work exempted under the changes to the Building Act
A range of construction projects have been made part of the changes including:
- Single-storey detached buildings up to 30sqm
- Carports with a maximum floor area of 40sqm
- Awnings with a maximum size of 30sqm
- Verandas and porches with a maximum size of 30sqm
- Outdoor fireplaces or ovens
- Detached single-storey pole sheds and hay barns
If the dwelling has cooking or sanitation facilities then, despite the changes to the Building Act, consent is likely to still be required. For example, if you are renting a cabin for a teenage sleepout and your teenager is coming into your home for meals and washing, you might not need consent. But a self-contained cabin for Airbnb or a granny flat could still need consent.
