Are your adult children having trouble getting on the property ladder due to Auckland’s high house and rental prices? Perhaps you thought they had left for good and now due to one reason or another – maybe a change in personal circumstances or job – you find them wanting to come back home. Whatever the reason – if you don’t want your adult children living directly under your roof the answer is a transportable unit.
Using a transportable unit for adult children gives everyone space and time
The biggest benefit of using a unit instead of sharing a home is that you all get your own space. While you may come together for shared family time, you will also have your own spaces to retreat to for peace and quiet.
Having your own space also means you can follow your own timetable. You can all come and go as you need to without disturbing others. This is great if your children have been gone a while and you have developed new routines. If your children are eating dinner early because they have young kids of their own but you don’t eat til late, it doesn’t matter.
Things to think about when getting a unit for adult children living with you
Do you have space for the unit?
If your children have a family of their own, then they may need a bigger unit to fit everybody in. You might need 2 or even 3 bedrooms and make it self-contained by adding a kitchen and bathroom. Check carefully to make sure your section can accommodate the unit and check your local authority regulations to see if you need consent to install it. Who will pay?
If your adult child is returning to live with you or staying with you because their financial circumstances are not great, then you may pay the bulk of the initial set up costs. However, you may wish to arrange a rental payment that at least covers some power and water costs. You’ll also need to think about who is paying for food. If you have a unit with a kitchen, then your family can be self-contained. Living arrangements like childcare
You will also need to talk in advance about other living arrangements like childcare or housework. Your child may need to use the washing machine or other facilities in the main house. It could also be easy to become an unpaid babysitter to grandchildren so talk about this early on to avoid any arguments. Talk about whether you want any of these arrangements or rental payment agreements in writing. You may need to help your child adjust to living with a family in a tiny home especially if they have been used to more space. How long will it be for and what will you do with the unit then?
If your adult child is not planning to live with you forever, think about what you are going to do with it. You might decide to sell it on, or use it as an income stream by renting it out long-term or as an Airbnb. Or you could use it as a hobby room.
